Because I love the sport (and love to go fast obviously), I wanted it to be the best I could. More on StartStar:StartStar is the only starting and sailing app that uses both the iphone screen and the speaker. For easy operation StartStar uses speech synthesis to provide constant spoken feedback. Before the start StartStar speaks the time to the start and distance to the start line. After the start StartStar provides continuous feedback on boat speed over the ground. As we tested the app, we found the continuous speed feedback a great way to improve sail trim, tacking technique and judging how high to go upwind and downwind. We confess we have wasted hours trying to see how fast we could plane downwind ! We also noticed we use much less battery if the screen is off.How to use: Set the countdown sequence start time in the settings. Press start at the first starting gun. Check the sequence on the next starting gun and press sync if necessary to adjust the time if you were late pressing the start button. If you miss the gun by miles, reset the counter by swiping your finger across the screen, the press the "+1" button until you have set the time of the next gun and begin again.Capture the position of the start line using the Committee boat (COM) and PIN buttons. We recommend you do this before the start sequence begins if you have the time! The coordinates of the Committee boat and Pin end will be saved for next race too. The distance to the line is calculated as the shortest distance to the line rather than the distance on your current heading so you get a better idea if you are over the line. You can set the minimum turn angle (I use 60 degrees), and the ‘window’ for the tack. I use 20-30 seconds in a dinghy. One might need more in a big yacht !TIPS:Please note GPS is never 100% accurate. It is best to combine GPS with visual clues too ! Whilst racing we suggest you turn off the iPhones Auto Lock feature as it can be annoying to have to type in your PIN.A waterproof case is strongly recommended ! I use the waterproof case Redpepper case (available from Amazon) and over the wired sports headphones such as PHILIPS SHQ2200/10. If I ever make a fortune and it is unlikely as the app is free then I would love to buy some noise-cancelling bluetooth sport headphones !The iPhone GPS's can take time to find the satellites. For best results start the app as you launch from the beach and give it time to find the satellites before the start. The GPS works best if you locate it away from metal objects that might block signals from the GPS satellites. Units: The speed used is knots. Distance is in metres.
