The original building was built in 1888 by a men’s organization that called themselves the Odd Fellows. In 1928, Joe Gabriel opened Gabriel Furniture at the corner of College Avenue and Morrison Street, downtown Appleton.

In 1974, Joe Wells began his career with Gabriel Furniture in sales. Some 14 years later, Joe and Ruby Wells purchased the business from Mr. Gabriel and expanded to include the three adjacent buildings — thus increasing the showroom space to 30,000 square feet. The building’s third floor was originally a ballroom and is now a loft-like showroom space.
