The Safe Teen Driver Lock application prevents your teen driver from being distracted by phone calls, text messages, social networking, and any other use of their cellular telephone while driving. Texting and driving results in thousands of serious injuries and deaths every year, so we put considerable time into thinking of a way to help change teen behaviors, give parents some peace of mind, and try to be part of the solution to this serious problem.

The application contains two interfaces:

* The first interface is for the Administrator (parent, guardian, or responsible adult). By clicking the application icon in the phone’s application drawer, the parent accesses the Administrator panel, where they can choose to turn the application on and off, input up to a five digit PIN number so only they can access the application’s settings, input their own cellular number if they would like to receive text messages updating them on the use of the app, select whether they would like to receive a text message each day the teen driver begins using their phone (this is handy since nothing can prevent them from uninstalling the application), and select whether they would like their teenager to be able to unlock the phone for 15 minutes while driving due to an emergency.

* The second interface is for the driver. When they begin driving, their phone will cut off all connectivity (Wifi, internet, data, phone, etc.) and display an overlay on the screen that prevents them from using any part of the phone’s normal functionality. Their interface will contain only two buttons – one that they can press if they have stopped driving and are in a hurry for the phone to unlock (since it may take a moment for the app to realize they have stopped) and another button that will unlock the phone for 15 minutes due to an emergency.

Other key features:

* If the teen driver is a passenger, the application will still operate. This prevents unnecessary distraction to the driver and also prohibits the driver from using the simply using the teen’s phone which is equally unsafe.

* If the Administrator forgets their PIN number, they can open the application and click a button to have it sent via text message to their cellular phone.

* If the driver uses the Emergency button, the Administrator will receive a text message alerting them that it has been used (so they can determine whether there was an actual emergency) and discuss with the teen driver. (Note: The Emergency function can always be revoked by the Administrator via their Administrator panel.)

* If anyone attempts to unlock the Administrator panel using an incorrect PIN number, the Administrator will be notified via text message on their cellular phone.

Important notes:

* The first time the Administrator opens the application, do not be surprised to experience about a 30-45 second delay. This is normal upon first use as the app performs many automatic setup functions before first launch.

* Safe Teen Driver Lock uses text messages and GPS, so normal messaging charges can apply. A detectable, but not serious, increase to battery usage has been reported due to the GPS radio.
