To measure slope angles in the mountains while hiking or backcountry skiing, hold device at arms length, align bottom of device with slope, and read the inclination angle.

Slopes from 25-60 degrees typically have a higher avalanche risk. Human triggered avalanches are most common from 35-45 degrees, with 38 degrees being the most common. Avalanche hazard typically increases uniformly with slope angle.
