Chowka Bhara is a two or four player board game from India. This game involves rolling of a special dice (cowries). The player then decides the pawn to be moved along the blocks and moves the pawn on the game board.

Objective of the game:

For a player to win, he/she must move all their pawns to the center square.

History:

Chowka Bhara is an ancient Indian board game of chance and strategy, still being played in certain parts of India. There are references of this game in ancient Indian epics like the Mahabharata.

Like many such games there are regional variations. It is played by young and old, rich and poor in villages and towns. Unlike Chess, which is a pure game of skill, in Chowka Bhara players throw dice whose outcome influences the game. Still strategy is important and can offset unfavorable outcome of dice.

This game has been traditionally played on a silk cloth-lined board and with 4 cowry shells. We can also play this board game by drawing a 5 x 5 matrix on a hard surface. You can setup a game almost at no cost.

Game Setup:

Chowka Bhara normally has a 5x5 square and two / four players. Variations of the game allow for a 7 x 7 squares or a 11 x 11 squares. Commonly played is the 5 x 5 square game. Assuming the size of the board is NxN (with N being odd), then each player will have N-1 pawns.

In this game, 2 players are pitted against each other. In single player mode, Player1 (you) will play against the device. In 2 players mode, Player 1(you) will play with another player (Player2).

How to play:

They start from the four crossed squares at the outermost ring and each player takes a turn to roll the shells. The covered part of the shell is considered to be of value 0 and the slit end is of value 1. However, if every shell manages to show a value 0 (i.e. land on the other end), then the value is considered to be 8. Therefore, the various values of this "special" dice are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8. If a player has cast the values 4 or 8, then he/she will get an additional turn. This may progress until that player gets a number other than 4 and 8 (i.e. 1,2 or 3).

Depending on the number the player gets, he/she can move one (or more) of their pawns that many number of squares on the board. Each player has a fixed path to move his/her pawns, which is in an anti-clockwise direction. The path for Player 1 is given in the figure above. Each player must completely traverse the outer squares, before stepping into the inner squares.

Rules:

1. Game is 5 x 5 square with max 2 players at a time.

2. Game allows only single pawn movements, Pair/double movements are not allowed.

3. Each player will get his turn, on count of each turn player has to move his pawns as his wish.

4. Each player has to kill at least 1 opponent's pawn to get through inner ring and record goal.

5. If all pawns of player record goal, then player will be declared as winner.

6. Game has 4 safe houses on board, Where pawns in square house can't be killed.

7. Central square house is goal house. Where player shall move pawns to central square house to record goal.

8. If player further turns doesn't have chances of killing opponents pawns, then opponents will be declared winners.

9. If both players doesn't have chances of killing opponents pawns, then game will be declared as draw.

10. Each player will receive bonus turn once his pawns kill opponents pawn and subsequent bonus turn will be rewarded, if he continues to kill opponents pawns.

11. For each turn with count for 4, 8 pts. Player will get one more bonus turn. Similar to killing opponents pawns.
